Why do I suddenly need an orange car of small proportions and dubious lineage?

Not being an expert on Fiero I can still tell you this is not a 1985. Fastback GT were introduced as a 1986 1/2 addition to the model year. Those with keener eyes will be able to note inclusion of features more closely fixing the year of manufacture.

Not being ahhh, overly enamored of this model. This is still a striking example fostering imaginative decision making. Speed holes seem a particularly ripe area for further personalization following along with the flame/charred motif.

At the outset this looks every bit an enthusiast car deserving of a good home. Even the smoked tail lights are inexplicably right. The always roiling internal debate wasn’t banked well enough against this fresh wind that somehow snuck by. Quite doubtful a purchase this ironic and hard to explain away being seen in, ever, is possible for me to accept. Would make a great gift?

Shouldn’t those flames be on the back?

Take 2:  always felt a little bad about the Fiero.   I think by the time they got it right, they killed it.

Fresh wind and desires well banked against them.

An unlikely to occur presently, in person assessment has a high chance of turning up reasons for that price. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

And you can just about bet these type of conflicts are going to continue to mount.  I’m highly conflicted.

Why is it riding so high? I thought the engine was missing.

And that’s his actual paint job? Not mismatched body panels?

You should go look at it to answer those questions. And find out the reason it’s $1800.  Maybe it’s because he has too much money.

“Automatic” = CP

I am not saying this out of a sense of manual elitism ( my daily driver is an auto). My first car was an automatic Fiero. That three -speed is the worst thing that ever happened to the Fiero, including the Frankenstein Chevette/Citation suspension.

I’m not sure what’s actually underneath that bodywork, but the front end is from an 87 -88 base model (or a Formula) and the back is from an 86 -88 GT.

Ad says he put on aftermarket side panels . T hat appears to be sealed two tone paint applied after fitting them. Lots of signs this is/was a well maintained enthusiast car. Leading belief the suspension got a once over to deal with the state of local roads.

Best case is the wife put it on the chopping block long ago and finances ripped the sheet off exposing it to public view?  Not going to bother these fine people for details to report on the internet during a lockdown.

Thanks, numerous things weren’t adding up in the 1985 model claim.  Probably started life as just that.

I once looked up the value calculations for Fieros. There was only one major determining factor - Automatics took a 2000$ penalty. That car, with a stick shift, would still be under 2k. So with an automatic it should be given away as a free car.

I think those are just the factory tailights. Pontiac loved smoked tailights

It is claimed to actively run and be legal to drive. That at least puts the value well above whatever the scrapyard pays. If all is above board, and after some haggling, it would make for a very memorable gift to burden someone with.

It looks like all he’s done is for the back is taken the rear body panels from a later  GT and put them on. Since the Fiero body is just plastic body panels over a spaceframe it’s not really a difficult job. I think that’s the main reason that the Fiero gets used for kits so often.

I roll my 88 with pride. The kids today think they are exotics. They are a blast to drive and you can put almost any engine you want in them. You can't hate on the wedge! You do need this in your life.

Good info on the Fiero here:

https://trivet.kinja.com/americas-most-misunderstood-car-1837032065

Most replies will be from non-Fiero owners who know little to nothing about the car. $1800 may be a decent price if the condition is good it and runs/drives perfectly. If not, keep looking - as these are easy to find in excellent condition under $2500.

The auto is not too bad, nowhere as fun as the manual, but it is damn near bullet proof.

Jokes about engine fires will most certainly be prevalent . These comments serve a very useful purpose - they show the complete and utter ignorance of the commentor.

Could easily be an 85 with a fastback conversion. Body p arts from all years are a bolt-on fit. (with some minor exceptions). It does appear to be sitting high, probably the wrong springs or adjustable coilovers set way too high. Guessing on that....

The missing rear fastb ack sail panel(s) is a concern. An original set in good condition will cost almost as much as the car itself. Aftermarket sets are cheaper, but often not perfect.

In short, they are a fun easy-to-work-on car with strong aftermarket and enthusiast support.

The tail lights alone are easily worth 1/2 of the asking price. Unfortunately , the missing sail panels are just as expensive .
